The wall of St. Mary's Catherdral in Hildesheim, Germany has the world's oldest living rose bush climbing its wall. Thought to be over 1000 years old, the rosebush symbolizes prosperity of the city. Legend says that as long as the bush flourishes, Hildesheim will not suffer decline. When in 1945 allied bombers destroyed the Cathedral, the bush's roots remained unscathed and began growing once again.
